10.5.2016: Toronto Moon Review
A little review of (disPLAY):
Bringing dynamic lighting and stage presence to complement an exciting guitar-rich sound and provocative lyrics, a combination that resonates traces of David Bowie, the 80s and Brit Pop, but that is passionately and intelligently original... Shepherdson's bubbling, urgent and mind-tingling licks are simply spectacular by anyone's measure. Johannes has a voice that complements it perfectly, by turns pleading, haunting, menacing, enticing, and declarative and always completely mesmerizing.

"Thank for you giving so many of us (myself included) the strength and permission to not only be ourselves, but anyone we wanted to be."

3.3.2015: Spur-Of-The-Moment Shakespeare Benefit Tonight!
The Spur-Of-The-Moment Shakespeare Collective was founded in March 2010 with the Shakespeare-On-The-Subway Project. Originally created to break down economic barriers and provide opportunities for emerging theatre artists to hone their craft, the SOTMSC has become an ever-growing network of emerging artists from multiple disciplines sharing their love for the bard everywhere but on a stage.
TONIGHT, Paint returns to the stage for the first time in 2015 for a performance at the Spur-Of-The-Moment Shakespeare Collective's 5th birthday party, and the history between Paint and Spur is long and close. Not only are we both about the same age (our debut album came out 5 years ago last year), Spur co-founder and director Victoria Urquhart has played leading roles in Paint's "Boomerang" music video and upcoming 11:11 film.
All the more, Paint drummer Devin Jannetta recently appeared in this Spur video as his recurring Detective Slick Shepard character:
...and the ongoing comedy featuring Victoria Urquhart as an obsessive Robb Johannes fan:
It all happens at Rancho Relaxo, 300 College Street, Toronto. See the Tour page for details and RSVP on Facebook.

Thanks to Danger: Canadian Content for the review of Paint's August 28 tour opener at The Supermarket in Toronto.

Photo by Angel H. Marchini / Back 2 Basics
"The last five years for Paint have really been about trying to be as great as we were when we first started (which I'm proud to say we are now), so celebrating the fact that we're still a band and that our first record is still exciting to listen to is a pretty special thing." - Robb Johannes

9.12.2014: The imagination of the audience: Waterloo Record Article
Photo by Joe Mac / Midnight Matinee
From the school of U2/Nirvana with lush bits of Psychedelic Furs, Pulp and Suede-like Brit Pop, Paint's music palette is infectious. Rife with striking jangling guitars, melodious riffs, and pounding bass, the band's solid soundscape serves as the consummate backdrop for Johannes' impassioned intelligent vocals.
Thanks to The Waterloo Record for the toughtful and detailed interview with Robb in advance of tonight's show at Cork Hall in Kitchener.

"It's not just about going to see music, it's about being part of something bigger than yourself" - Robb Johannes
Thanks to The Greater Napanee News as well as the Napanee Beaver for the previews of Saturday's stop at the Waterfront River Pub:
A creative force within the highly-competitive Canadian music scene... intelligent, well-crafted, melodic alternative rock (with) a healthy dollop of 1980s arena rock for good measure... truly a refreshing change from the formulaic, uninspired melange that currently dominates the airwaves these days, and demonstrates that they are creative artists who are always striving to be true to themselves and unafraid of letting its musical roots show.
Visit the Press page for full text of both articles.

7.15.2014: FACTOR Funded for the soundtrack to 11:11
As you know, we've been busy at work with director R. Stephenson Price (who previously directed Paint's "Boomerang" music video) on a black-and-white narrative film written by Robb Johannes called 11:11, which was graciously made possible thanks to your contributions to our IndieGogo campaign from last fall.
Of course, a major part of 11:11 is the soundtrack, comprised of four brand new Paint songs and soundscapes. The trouble in paradise to fund the recording with producer Ian Smith (who worked with Paint on Where We Are Today) was partially resolved this week.
We are proud to announce that FACTOR, through the government of Canada, has offered assistance in the completion of the 11:11 soundtrack!
This is a giant leap forward for us and this project, and we wouldn't have been able to get here without you. Much love, and looking forward to what's next.
7.7.2014: Can You Hear Me? 5th Anniversary Deluxe Edition - August 12
Some fans wrote us recently and said, "Can you believe that Can You Hear Me? is going to be five years old this August?" The thought hadn't occurred to us.
Consequently, it's been a time of reflection and retrospective on our debut LP, how far we've come, and the level of greatness we've continued to strive for, and until recently, have felt we haven't had since Can You Hear Me?, which has been our most critically-acclaimed release:
"All killer, no filler... destined for arenas" (Soundproof Magazine)
"Picture perfect" (102.1 The Edge)
"5 stars" (Youthink Magazine)
"Perfect blend of classic rock crunch and contemporary rock smarts" (The Record)
We are proud to let you be the first to know that on August 12, 2014, we will be releasing a deluxe 5-year anniversary edition of Can You Hear Me?
The expanded 5-"disc" digital compilation will include unreleased songs, demos, live performances, interviews (both from prior to Can You Hear Me?'s release and retrospective interviews with original members from Vancouver: Robb Johannes, Matt Laforest, and Paula McGlynn), and expanded artwork and liner notes.
Can You Hear Me? 5th Anniversary Deluxe Edition will be released exclusively through paintband.com to start. More details, pre-order information, and previews will be launched this month.
We would neither still be a band that's outlived most independent acts, or be able to release this special edition of our album if not for you. Thank you for your ongoing and undying support!
6.30.2014: "By the Numbers" episode 5: on Neil Young

Paint's Robb Johannes, as a lifelong die-hard Neil Young fan, has assembled a Toronto indie supergroup called "Prisoners of Rock 'n' Roll," who will, for one night only on Friday, July 4, perform a set of Neil Young & Crazy Horse songs as part of a "Canada Day on Independence Day" tribute night at Rancho Relaxo in Toronto.
Prisoners of Rock 'n' Roll (whose name is derived from a track on the 1987 Neil Young & Crazy Horse album Life) are: Robb Johannes on vocals, Erik Kolomayz of The Rathburns (a band long-praised by Paint) on bass, Mike Scarlett of A Northern Drawl and Colin James Gibson of The Stormalongs on guitars, and Steve Finn from Another City on drums.
This will truly be a be a night to remember.
More details on the Tour page and RSVP on Facebook HERE!
6.16.2014: "By the Numbers" episode 4 and happenings this week
Robb takes some time in episode four of the "By The Numbers" podcast series to discuss North by Northeast's controversial "45-day radius clause," which resulted in the creation of the Soundtrack of the City Music Series (which will feature a performance by Paint ths Friday, June 20 at Cherry Cola's, at 11pm), as well as his involvement in the post-punk band Rulers of the Moon, in which he will make his live debut this Saturday, June 21, 10pm at Rancho Relaxo (fittingly enough, as an NXNE showcase!).
Listen to episode 4 and previous "By The Numbers" episodes on Paint's SoundCloud.
6.11.2014: "Fans First": RiffYou.com Feature Interview
Photo by Joe Mac / Midnight Matinee
We had a show recently in Toronto where I was pretty awfully sick and didn't have most of my upper vocal register. The audience crashed the stage and wailed along with me -- and to songs that haven't been recorded/released yet. Experiences like that are humbling and beautiful, and we don't take them for granted for a second.
-Robb Johannes
Thanks to the kind folks at RiffYou.com for chatting with Robb about Paint's journey to the present, the road ahead with the 11:11 film, the ongoing reciprocal relationship with fans, and what famous musicians he'd love to discuss songwriting with.
There are plenty more reviews, features, interviews, and quotes on Paint on the Press page!

Episode two of our new podcast series, "By the Numbers," is up now.

5.28.2014: Want to be Paint's permanent bass player?
Hi friends, many of you may be familiar with us, especially if you follow this page. What you may not know is that Devin Jannetta, Jordan Shepherdson, and Robb Johannes have been operating effectively as a trio without a permanent bass player for almost two years now. It's been working just fine to have friends sub in on the regular (if you've been following our activity or coming to our shows) but it's time we got a permanent partner and contributing member.
If you may be, or may know anybody who may be, interested in joining a band constantly referred to as the best live act in Toronto, and one of Canada's hardest working indie bands, please spread the word, and email us at thepaintband@gmail.com! Thanks!
5.20.2014: "By the Numbers" podcast series debut
We're excited to announce a new podcast series called "By the Numbers," where we'll be talking about music, politics, and conversations amongst ourselves and with other artists.

3.11.2014: 11:11 Party Scene Shoot March 15
We're busy at work on the 11:11 film that was made possible thanks to your kind contributions to our IndieGogo campaign! We've been posting behind-the-scenes photos to the @paintband accounts on on Instagram and Twitter as we've been working with director R. Stephenson Price (who previously directed Paint's "Boomerang" music video).
We have a very special offer for anyone in the Toronto area.
On Saturday, March 15, we'll be filming the party scene for 11:11, and thought we may as well just host an actual party and do a bit of filming on the side. It's set in the summer (but is filmed entirely indoors in an apartment) so why not wish this prolonged winter away by pretending?
RSVP on Facebook for all the info.
3.2.2014: Music City North Festival March 20

2.20.2014: Robb Johannes on The Smiths
Today The Smiths' debut record turns 30. Same Page wrote a feature on the article and asked some Toronto artists to reflect on what The Smiths have come to mean to them over the years, including our very own Robb Johannes.
"Morrissey once said that most popular music at the time (and still now I would say) would insult the intelligence of its audience by catering to populism and watered down messages. The Smiths, on the other hand, gave their audience credit for being intelligent and discerning people. As a result, not only could The Smiths incorporate a greater intellect into their music, but their small and highly devoted fanbase felt like they were a part of a mutual exchange of ideas. The line between the audience and the performer disappeared, and given my own roots in punk, I highly admire that. It's surely made its way into Paint's ethos as a "pop" band."
- Robb Johannes

1.27.2014: Congratulations Joe Mac!
Last week, our dear friend Joe Mac was honoured by Ontario Roller Derby for being an all-star photographer. In addition to derby, the majority of Paint's live photos since 2011 have been taken by the one and only Joe Mac.
"I almost consider Joe Mac to be the 5th member of Paint. He's been with us through everything, and his action photography in roller derby is why he can capture this rock band so frighteningly on stage. Congrats friend, this is well-deserved." - Robb Johannes
1.24.2014: The PSA is out!
Never a band to shy away from its principles, Paint frontman Robb Johannes announced from the stage at Lee's Palace last night that Toronto Mayor Rob Ford's politics and public image have alienated and saddened Torontonians so much that it is not simply enough to vote against him. Rather, every Torontonian should go the extra step and run against Ford to send a clear message that Toronto deserves better on election day, October 27.
Read Robb's platform at robbnotford.com, and visit The City of Toronto Elections Website to find out how you can also get involved.
1.9.2014: Returning to stage in Toronto in Style at Lee's Palace Jan. 23
Holidays are over, and Paint returns to stage in Toronto on January 23 at the one and only Lee's Palace.

"Let Go," part seven of Paint's Video Album Project, is assembled from the Sid Davis 1951 trilogy of fear-based propaganda films aimed at youth (Name Unknown, Boys Beware, and Girls Beware), which took a controversial, conservative, anti-homosexual and anti-feminist standpoint on emerging civil liberties in America.
An experiment in minimalism and a nod to Andy Warhol's films, "Vampires" becomes part eight of the Video Album Project.
"Let Go," "Vampires" and other Paint songs are available on iTunes, CDBaby, and the Paint Store.
More videos are up on Paint's Official YouTube Channel.

6.19.2013: TWMFEST Show June 29
Paint is honoured and humbled to be performing as part of TWMFEST on Saturday, June 29 at 11pm.
Over the past seven years, Two Way Monologues has put on over 2000 shows at Rancho Relaxo in Toronto, including AWOLNATION, Dinosaur Bones, The Darcys, Whale Tooth, and Paint's first ever show as a band in Toronto in July 2009 (and many appearances since, such as the critically-acclaimed NxNE 2012 showcase and special events like the Pearl Jam vs. Nirvana and David Bowie vs. Iggy and The Stooges tribute shows).
In addition to being a concert venue, Rancho Relaxo has also become a community hub of sorts, where on any given night members of Toronto's music community can be found checking out each others' shows, visiting friends, and building what have become lifelong friendships, band partnerships and collbaorations, and tightly-knit community connections. For many musicians in Toronto, Rancho Relaxo has been their version of Cheers -- Paint included.
In marking the end of Two Way Monologues' reign booking the Ranch, June 27-29 will be host to TWMFEST, a 3-night celebration of the music community in Toronto and an honour of Dan Wolovick's work as one of the cities most loyal and dedicated promoters before moving on to his new home at The Handlebar in Kensington Market.
Tickets for TWMFEST are $10 for a single-night admission, or $20 for a 3-night pass.

11.19.2012: C'est What? week 2 review and photos
A review from T-MAK World of Paint's second residency show at C'est What? says: "Paint is a compelling original band... Singer Robb Johannes at times evokes (R.E.M.'s) Michael Stipe... He has an easy charisma and confident swagger... The band played some new songs on Tuesday that will win over the band's ever growing fan base."
And more photos from the talented Joe Mac are up on Paint's Official Flickr Photostream.
RSVP on Facebook or visit the Tour page for details on the remaining two shows.
Other reviews of albums and shows past can be read on the Press page.

And Happy Birthday Neil Young. We wouldn't exist without you.
11.9.2012: Residency show #1 article and photos
Chronicle from Joe Mac on the first residency show says: "Paint is still the star of the night. And they may not realize the constant travel on the road has led to an easy confidence and given them a bit of that hippy hippy shake on stage. And we did mention moves like Jagger [but not in shades of maroon]." (read more HERE).
First batch of photos are up on Paint's Official Flickr Photostream.

(Johannes') inspirational lyrics reflect with a nice leftist political flare... (and) are where Paint's second LP could set them apart from other bands."
This and other reviews are on the Press page.
10.1.2012: C'est What? residency in November
Last February, Paint stage tested in-progress material for what eventually became the album Where We Are Today, over a weekly Tuesday residency at C'est What? in Toronto. The month-long residency also resulted in a court case against Rob Ford and the City of Toronto for anti-postering charges, which the band and C'est What?'s management successfully overturned (details/refresher HERE).
We are proud to announce that every Tuesday in November 2012, Paint will be back at C'est What? to share new and old songs, joined by a stellar cast of musical and comedy guests.
Details on the Tour page.

Andrew Horan with North by East West asks in response to Paint's North by Northeast Showcase, "Why Toronto's Paint hasn't broken through to a wider audience is a complete mystery and their top notch set at Rancho Relaxo proved why. Singer Robb Johannes played like was at a venue twice its size."
More reviews from past and present are on the Press. page.

5.10.2012: Reflections on Waterloo
Ontario's Kitchener/Waterloo region has a special place in Paint's heart, namely because significant parts of the new album, Where We Are Today, were recorded there, during which time the band made a second home of sorts in K/W (remember the documentary Where We Were in April). More so, the city of Waterloo has always been kind and supportive, especially Maxwell's Music House.
A new review in Velvet Rope Magazine comments on Paint's March 28 set at Maxwell's: "Paint is well-tuned...with the precision of a mature and seasond band... the future is all theirs for the taking." Read the full article HERE.
There was, however, one unfrtunate occurrence last time Paint passed through town, chronicled in this article in the Waterloo Record, where cash, t-shirts, financial records, and some personal clothing items were stolen after the show. Thanks to the kind folks in Waterloo for all their help on this, and any further into can be directed towards the Contact page.

Ticketing information TBA, and all details will be up here on the Tour. page.
We couldn't be doing this again without your ongoing support, so thank you!
4.10.2012: Show Review from Kingston
Kingston Music Reviews, in response to Friday's show at the Merchant, says: "Right from their first song I just went holy f*ck why didn't (Robb put down the guitar) a couple years back, Robb's live performance throughout the first song made their songs explode in comparison... He looked so natural on stage from his opening note (and) it didn't take Robb anytime at all to pretty much take full control of the audience and the stage. I have never seen him so alive before than what I saw tonight." Read more and view photos HERE.
Keep an eye out for tour photos, blogs, and a documentary in the coming weeks, and thanks for making this tour the most memorable and enjoyable in Paint's history!
4.8.2012: Interview from Kingston (Video)
Thanks to Matt Hartwick from Kingston Music Reviews for the constant support. He caught up with Paint after soundcheck last Friday at the Merchant Tap House. Watch the interview above or visit YouTube.
4.1.2012: Canadian Music Week Review
Buying Shots for Bands on Paint's Canadian Music Week showcase: "Intensely dynamic frontman Robb Johannes worked the crowd and had the early arrivers quickly clapping along. Juxtaposed with their powerpop hooks, there is a darker edge to many of their songs... It's the live performance that adds a greater depth to the band and breaks them out of the mold of being just another pretty pop band."

12.26.2011: David Bowie Tribute Show Jan. 8
As a band committed to original music, it's always a rare and fun treat when Paint plays a show in honour of one of their favourite artists. Back in July there was the Pearl Jam vs. Nirvana show (which you can watch HERE), and on January 8, 2012, the band will be part of a David Bowie 65th birthday tribute show at the Garrison in Toronto. 11.29.2011: A Small Victory
We are happy to report that on Monday, Robb Johannes of Paint and Tim Broughton of C'est What? had the City of Toronto's anti-postering charges dropped! Read this blog to get all the details.
While we do celebrate the small victory of a single case, wider struggles around the legality of postering, in spite of Supreme Court decisions that have affirmed the value of postering as a fundamental right, do require proactive involvement of artists and promoters in Toronto.
The show on Dec. 8 will thus be a victory celebration!
11.21.2011: Congratulations Michael Chambers!
A well-deserved "Engineer of the Year" award for Michael Chambers (pictured above on the right) at the 2011 Hamiton Music Awards. We had the great pleasure of working with Michael on Where We Are Today at Catherine North Studios earlier this year. The proof is int he records, congratulations Michael!
11.15.2011: Anti-postering show December 8
As you may recall, back in February 2011, Paint played a month-long residency at C'est What? in Toronto. Months later, the City of Toronto under Rob Ford's "anti-graffiti" crusade, fined C'est What? for posters promoting Paint's shows.
Robb Johannes of Paint and C'est What?'s management are contesting the charges with the city and will be in court on November 28 at 1:00 p.m.
On December 8, Paint will be returning to C'est What? with the always lovely Mittenz and Darren Eedens for an anti-postering awareness show. Depending on the outcome of the November 28 hearing, this show will either act as a victory celebration or a fine fundraiser. Stay tuned to see which!
Details on the show are on the Tour page.
RSVP and spread the word through Facebook HERE, and we really looking forward to seeing you out to support something that does affect all of us!
Read a backrounder on the case in the NOW Magazine, as well as the blog by Robb Johannes that started it all.
10.10.2011: Video Album Project
Surely Paint has developed a reputation over the past two years of being road warriors, and we look forward to resuming active touring and live performance in 2012. In the meantime there will be a few live shows that we'll inform you of, and we will be embarking on an ambitious Video Album Project: every song on Where We Are Today will be made into a music video and presented on Paint's Official YouTube Channel one by one in the coming months. We will be collaborating with several independent filmmakers along the way, and if you are reading this and happen to be one (or know of one), get in touch and we can discuss further!
10.6.2011: Indie Week and Canadian Music Week, more press, etc.
Thanks to all the old friends, new friends, and beautiful strangers who lent us their ears, hearts, and sometimes homes from Windsor, Ontario to Windsor, Nova Scotia. The pleasure was entirely ours and we look forward to seeing you all again. A collection of photos from Paint's Where We'll Be 2011 Tour is up on The Official Paint Flickr Photostream now.
Some new reviews of Where We Are Today: "4 STARS: A cohesive collection of songs" (The Fulcrum), and "The vocals and instruments come together like a Jim Creeggan and Billy Corgan love child, powered by a Kings Of Leon aesthetic... A punk-rock bash out of drums and energized vocals" (The Dalhousie Gazette). Read more in the Press section.
We are proud to announce Paint will be playing Indie Week 2011 on October 13 at the Underground Garage in Toronto. Details on the Tour page. Also, Paint will be appearing at Canadian Music Week 2012 as one of the first round of artist selections!

9.27.2011: Reviews from the Road
The critics keep on speaking!
Julia Rogers at The Argosy in Sackville NB says, "Where We Are Today is an exciting blend of catchy pop rock and stellar lyrics... (a) soul-satisfying 10-song compilation... (with) undeniable brilliance."
An interview with Jessica Willms at The Fulcrum in Ottawa gives some of the band's history and the process behind making Where We Are Today.
And Joe Mac of Midnight Matinee, on Paint's Toronto stop at the Hideout, exclaims: "Paint have a penchant for effusive pop, catchy tunes and crafty words that evoke picturesque imagery."
Visit the Press page for more, and don't forget to check out the photo and setlist archive from past shows on the Tour page.
9.13.2011: Live and album reviews
Thanks to Nadia Elkharadly with The Examiner for the glowing review of Paint's Toronto album release show at the Hideout: "Intelligent people making incredible music, Paint will surely be making headlines in the music scene, sharing their thoughtful lyrics and addictive tunes with fans for a long time to come."
Visit the Press under "Live Reviews."
Also, Ryan Bromsgrove with The Gateway, in reviewing Where We Are Today, says: "Johannes sounds like he's in total control of the music, effortlessly slipping between mild exasperation to yearning to demanding -- all on just one track ("Boomerang") -- perfectly complemented by the flexible guitar work in the background. The lyrics and vocals never dwell upon one emotion or style for too long, skilfully avoiding the deadly fate of boring the listener. Start to finish, the album sounds right."
More to come as we are on we're on tour all month, but also note that since we do manage our own website, it's easier for us to update Facebook and Twitter while we're on the road. Stay in touch, cool?
9.6.2011: Where We Are Today... AVAILABLE TODAY!
